Distinctive Designs on Custom Cards

From two Cromwell basements occupied by Boy Scout mom's with an affinity for scrapbooking has come one of Connecticut's most celebrated, and successful, microbusinesses-JK Designs, a custom card and stationery maker with racks throughout central Connecticut.

In addition to their ready-made and pushed into corporate greetings, though, designers Jean Dunning and Karen Gumkowski continue to offer designs for smaller clients. There's a minimum of 10 cards per custom order, a more likely size for people planning a baby shower or graduation announcement, but Dunning and Gumkowski haven't found a maximum. Orders of more than 300 may take longer, they warn, since each card is handmade, but they produced 350 invitations for a state legislature reception last year without batting an eye.

"We really like that design. It reflected elements of Connecticut," Dunning said, referring to the oak leaves incorporated onto the cardstock. "And it went to a lot of people, so we got a lot of feedback."

By now, JK Designs has long since finished its Christmas orders and started thinking about Valentine's Day-opening up a possibility for someone who needs New Year's Eve party invites. But Dunning offers a reminder: Two weeks is JK's standard turn around time.

At a minimum order size, customers can expect to pay $2 or $2.50 per card, with wholesale rates begining at orders of 50 cards or more.

JK Designs work can be found at more than a dozen sites throughout central Connecticut, including Celebrations in Deep River, Heart of the Country in Old Wethersfield, it's Only Natural and Sweet Smelling Savour Chocolates and Ashanti Chocolat stores in Middletown, Sugarplums in Westbrook, Tapestry Rose in Rocky Hill, and the Wild Raspberry in Cromwell. The cards' creators can be reached at (860) 635-1451 or by going to cardsbyjkdesigns.com.
